Lambs times Five

April 10, 2011 § 7 Comments

Between Susan bringing home two black Border Leicesters & an angora goat kid, and the ewes going into full-on LAMBALANCH mode, we’ve suddenly QUINTUPLED the lamb population here.

Liberty delivered one ram lamb out in the pasture, then one in the stall.

Dakota, however, we were able to watch give birth out in the pasture:

Indigo was born first, all yellow from meconium. I got to carry him in to the maternity ward (which they’re currently sharing with Liberty & her boys)– you walk very slowly, holding the lamb at his mother’s eye level, getting soaked in goo and lamb-juice. And mama follows after her baby.

Once we were in the paddock (in to which we’d turned out Snow and her baby, Wren), Dakota squeezed out another baby, a little ewe, and surprised us all.

Wren was very curious about her new playmates– I cannot wait to see them all play together once they all grow up enough to be turned out into the pasture.

Scarlet was already trying to get up, just as soon as she was born! (Click on the picture for the .gif!)

These are the kids we most recently turned out– Roma & Jonathan. They and the other 4 little bucklings have been wonderful to watch sproinging around:

And then I found Amelia and her babies while doing morning chores:

These babies couldn’t be more perfect– I found them already clean, already standing, and already nursing. There wasn’t anything left to help Amelia out with, except walk her up to the shed and find her her own spot in our ever-more-crowded barn & paddock.

They’re beautiful-looking little ewe lambs, and, especially after the last few days, I couldn’t be happier that they’re strong and healthy.

I know, I feel so completely lucky! (although, it’s lots more work. Susan may have used the phrase, “trial by fire”.)

So precious! Are they always born with meconium all over them? Then the mother gets to lick that all off. How lovely? I’m glad humans don’t have to do that.

So cute, thank you for sharing these magical days with us. I hope you are keeping your strength up – as best as can be expected – and are enjoying all the baby goodness.

  • Congratulations, Caroline! I’d call it “trial by lamb goo!” Excellent!
