The Days Are Just Packed.

March 31, 2011 § 8 Comments

They’re so packed, it seems like I’ve been here for four weeks, not four days. There was a nothing’s-really-happened-yet-to-blog-about phase (Monday), a things-are-wonderful-but-we’re-so-worried-and-upset-about-Petrel phrase (Tuesday), an increasingly-urgent-need-to-blog phrase (Yesterday), and now, this morning, finally, I’ve got a few good pictures and more to say than is possible.

So I don’t think I’ll even try to tell it all. We’ll start with today.

Y’all’ve probably already read that Mrs. Doubtfire gave birth to twin boys last night, and I’m happy to report that, this morning, they’re looking good (as cute as can be, to be precise).

Jekyll and Piper were also willing to pose for their mother-baby glamour-shots:

jekyll & piper

I tried to get a good shot of all the baby chicks we’ve got– Ethel has hatched 5 chicks so far (some are her own, but some of the other ones hatched from eggs that the other hens laid in her nest, so they’re all different colors), plus Susan brought back 8 chicks from the store (4 Golden Comets, and 4 Tetra Tints) yesterday. We were able to sneak them under Ethel last night in a bit of HEN SUBTERFUGE that was, I think, really successful.

So, that makes 13 in total. Add in the shipment of Extra-Fancy Chicks that we’re expecting soon– and that’s a LOT of poultry.

Plus, swinging by the coop meant that I was able to collect some more eggs:

That’s all for now, but, in the meantime, I’ll be GARDENING WITH PIGS, and trying to come up with some baby names for Mrs. Doubtfire’s new ramlings (not gonna lie: I’ve been scanning this intently, on the hunt for some good names). The first apples to come to mind were “Gala” and “Pink Lady,” which are, I think, a little too feminine for these boys.

Susan & I will let you know what we come up with!

So many names to choose from! Crispin! Braeburn! Pippin! And the list goes on and on! I can’t wait to see what you choose!

    • carolinefryar says:

ooh, I like those! Winesap? Honeycrisp?
the wikipedia page also lists a “Lord Lambourne,” but that might not be a good fit for a goat.
and: Rambo, the Sylvester Stallone character, was apparently named after the Rambo apple.

I’m starting to get way too in to this.

    !!!! that’s a green egg!!!

Sorry for caring more about the chickens, still!!

The picture of the twins is the cutest though. <3

yeah, those are everyone’s favorite eggs (they look so much like easter!).
and baby goats /are/ the cutest! widely acknowledged to be cuter than lambs.

  • Lori aka knittingfool says:

Great pics! I love the glamour shot. You are off and running!

  • How about Lobo and Lodi? Baby goats are indeed the cutest things in the universe :)

I may be a bit biased, so sue me :)

Welcome to the farm family, you’re off to a great start!

  • Great pics and a belated welcome! I guess you haven’t been bored yet? :)

    • carolinefryar says:

no way have I been bored! I thought I might be a little cabin-feverish by now, not having left for almost a week– but (and this is a little cliche) there’s always something new going on! Every day is so different!
